Broken Group Islands Mentored Trip (2B/3B)

When: May 26, 2018 until June 2, 2018

A spectacular set of islands on the west coast of  Vancouver Island, the Broken Group Islands are a kayaker’s dream destination, offering a secluded wilderness adventure. 4 Students will join 2-3 Instructors. Typically we will be on the water by 9am and off the water by 3pm. We won’t paddle great distances but we’ll do lots of exploring.

This trip is setup for Advanced Beginner/Low Intermediate paddlers and is ideal for paddlers who have previous day trip and/or overnight trip experience but are looking to gain the skills needed for multi-day trips. Completion of SKABC courses, such as Beginner Paddling, are recommended. Paddle skills should include basic strokes, wet exit, self rescue and rescue assist.

The Broken Group Islands an be subject to extreme weather. A wetsuit or drysuit will be mandatory. Extra clothes, food and camping gear should be properly stowed in waterproof containers and/or dry bags in case of a capsize or inclement conditions. All participants must have either Chart 3670 Broken Group or Chart 3671 Barkley Sound (laminated or in a waterproof chart case).

The goal of this trip is to enjoy 6 days of “West Coast” paddling and camping, learn and improve on basic multi-day paddling skills, gain confidence in kayak touring, and encourage participants to enroll in SKABC Instructor courses and potentially lead their own trips.

Some of the skill areas covered are:
• Chart Reading & Navigation
• Tide & Current Tables
• Packing a Kayak
• Group Paddling Guidelines
• Camp Setup & Food Preparation (everyone is responsible for one group supper)
• Trip Leader Decisions (everyone will assume the trip leader role one day)
• VHF Radio Use (including listening to Weather Reports)
• GPS Use

One week before the trip the group will meet in Deep Cove to cover meal planning/car pooling/logistics/equipment, plus take to the water for 2-3 hours of paddling. The paddle will be a “shakedown” for the trip ensuring everyone has their equipment in order and we will practice wet exits and rescues.
