Minimum and maximum participants: 2 and 8

Total tour distance:  16 km (8.5nm)

Summary:

Sign up for a kayak day tour to several important archaeological sites in the Southern Indian Arm area.  Participants will learn how to identify sites, get familiar  with the relevant legislation and low-impact visits, and last learn about various threats to archaeological sites in coastal areas.

We will launch from Strathcona park (near Deep Cove), which bears the Tsleil-Waututh name of Say-umiton.  Strathcona is an ancient village site with over 1,000 years of history.  The group will paddle first across the inlet to Belcarra Park to look at shell midden from the Tsleil-Waututh site of Tum-tumay-whueton, a large indigenous town which has been occupied for at least 3000 years.  Next we will paddle north to the Twin Islands, which have a very small shell midden and also the remains of historic cottages.  This should be our lunch spot!  Last, we will paddle north approximately 1 mile to a rock art site on the west shore of the inlet, then back to our launch.

Participants must agree, in addition to the usual SKABC club waiver and rules, to abide by protocols aimed at preservation of the sites.  These include no digging or removal of artifacts or items, no posting of site photographs online, and no dissemination of exact site locations.

Parking at Strathcona is much easier than in Deep Cove, but is limited.  Carpooling is encouraged, and please arrive on-time at 800.  Launch is planned for 8:45 AM after introductions and a brief orientation.

To participate, please contact Brian Pegg at: brianpegg@gmail.com and include when you last practiced a wet exit.
