Good afternoon all.   Previous information on the web and publications show camping and beaches on VanSittart Island at the north end of Vancouver Island.   The current BCMT map shows the island as closed.   Does anyone have any or know where to get current information on the extent of the closure; no landing, no camping, etc.   Thanks for any suggestions.

Thanks Ken.   That would seem to eliminate circumnavigating or paddling the outside of Nigei Island.   Back to the charts for more planning!

    Hi Nancy!

Indeed Vansittart is very much closed. The First Nations of Hope Island have requested no camping / landing at any spot on the Island. We did a trip up that way for a day paddle last summer to see the island and they had boat patrols stationed at the Island to keep visitors away from the Island.

This is due to the very special pack of wolfs that have been on this Island for some time now and trouble was brewing with visitors interacting with wildlife in ways that was not acceptable.

This is info direct from the boat patrols in person from last year. Best to avoid the Island all together so you don’t get stuck out that way with no place to camp / land in the event of a weather change.
