Rob, It sure is worth the extra cost with shuttle. I have done same on the second trip. We went up to the Fox Group, dropped kayaks on the water and paddled up to the Sullivan Bay, at took it from the ocean exposed side back to the Telegraph Cove. We have meet one paddler in the northern area, comparing with south, it really has desolated vibes… ( At Sullivan Bay, there is always at least one person – keeper watching parked houseboats, potential to restock basic supplies as well) And to your question, once again, I would go again for the northern part, rather than south if I only had one option. Despite smaller potential to watch  whales.
