Whytecliff Park to Keats Island Overnight Trip (3C)

Plumper Cover national park located on the Northwest shore of Keats Island. Launching from Dufferin Avenue West Vancouver near Whytecliff park.

Options are:

1. To cross the channel to Bowen Island, paddle South side of the Bowen Island while staying closed to the shore. Will stop at Tunstall Bay for lunch. (About 8 knots paddle before lunch)

After lunch we will paddle around Pasley Island to Salmon rock then to Plumper Cover Provincial park for overnight camping. (closer another 5 knots paddle)

This route is more exposed, but more picturesque

2. Head North around Bowen and stop for lunch on the north shore. Continue around the north of Keats to plumber cove (total 11nm) or 13 if we detour to Hermit for lunch

The return trip next day can follow either route.

Group size: Minimum 3 participants. Maximum 6.
Distance from Dufferin Avenue to Plumper Cove: 24km (13 NM)

Potential hazards: strong winds and waves are common in Howe Sound. Also boats and ferry traffic could generate swells and big waves. A wet-suit or dry-suit is mandatory. Extra clothes, food and camping gear should be properly stowed in waterproof containers and/or dry bags in hatches.

Howe Sound wind condition will be evaluated on Friday and the trip will be cancelled if strong winds prevail. 

Must have a suitable boat, and all recommended coast guard equipment. Should include basic strokes, recent wet exit, self rescue and rescue assist practice. Capable of paddling at least 2hr between rest points.

What to bring: Camping gear, Cooking gear, we will coordinate a potluck dinner, water recommend 3L/day. Cash for the camping fee. Chart – Howe Sound (Marine Chart : 3526, or any chart that covers the area) in a waterproof case clipped to your deck.
