Trip Leader Course – Apr 14 evening & Apr 18-20 – Gulf Islands – CANCELLED

When: April 14, 2025 until April 20, 2025

Location:  Gulf  Islandson the beach

Spend three days in the Gulf Islands  developing the skills required to lead a SKABC trip for a day, a weekend or an extended period.

This course is aimed at paddlers who have some kayaking experience (day trips, overnight trips and multi-day trips), and would like to know more about leading SKABC trips in accordance with the club’s philosophy, which can be found on the website and is included at the bottom of this post.

Priority will be given to members who have committed to leading a trip in 2025.

Learning objectives of this course:

  • trip preparation
  • equipment to carry as the leader
  • launch site safety review
  • incident management
  • group integration to establish a cohesive team (group dynamics)
  • campsite environmental management

NOTE: The course includes an evening trip-planning meeting on Monday April 14 in the Dunbar area from 7-9 pm

Prerequisites:

  • Be able to perform a wet exit, assisted re-entry and unassisted (self) re-entry
  • Have overnight or multi-day trip experience
  • Know how to pack your kayak for camping
  • Be comfortable paddling a loaded boat
  • Be able to set up your own camp site at the end of the day
  • Interested in leading SKABC trips

Format: 

  • Trip Planning Meeting (see above for date and time)
  • 3 day trip with 2 nights camping in Gulf Islands
  • Participants are expected to wheel their boats onto the Tsawwassen – Swartz Bay ferry.

Fee: $50
Note: the fee will be refunded if a participant completes the course and leads a trip in 2025 or between January 1 and August 31 2026.

Travel and Camping Expenses: Participants are responsible for their own transportation, ferry costs, and camp fees. Camp fees are expected to be $7.50/night.

Limit: 8 participants   Minimum: 4 participants

Please contact the the course co-coordinator or Philip Kubik if you have questions or wish to speak to an instructor to determine whether you have sufficient experience and/or the course is a good fit for you.  One of the instructors will email you back with their availability to have a telephone conversation.  Feel free to provide your telephone number and indicate your availability to ease the process.  Once the instructors have determined that you meet the prerequisites, you will be sent a confirmation email and payment instructions to finalize your registration.

Registration Deadline: To avoid cancellation, a minimum of 4 members must be signed up and paid by noon on Saturday April 5, 2025.

SKABC Refund policy:
Subject to cancellation policies noted in the registration, if a course registrant cancels their registration, a full or partial refund of the course fee may be made only if another member is able to fill the vacant course place or if payments made by the Association to one or more third parties are refunded to the Association. All other refunds are at the discretion of the Training Officer.
