Sechelt Inlet (2B)

When: August 5, 2017 until August 7, 2017

This trip is now Full
This is a good trip for people new to kayak camping.  Between launch location to Nine Mile Point campsite (one of the two largest campsites in the inlet) is roughly 2 hr paddle.  There are two small campsites that we’ll pass by.  We can either just paddle past them or stop and rest at the campsites, if necessary.   If these campsites are too full, plan B is to cross the channel to Halfway campsite (another large campsite in the inlet) which is roughly another 4km (2.2 nm).

Day 2 will be a day paddle in the inlet (tentatively cross the channel and paddle on the west side of the inlet).

Day 3 is our return trip.  Although a campfire is allowed, there are occasional fire bans in this area due to dry conditions.

Launch Location:
We can launch from either Tillicum Bay Marina (if we have no renters in the group) or the PRIVATE beach at Pedals and Paddles rental (if we have people renting from them)

Launch time:
We will target around 10:00am (depends on ferry schedule)

Group size:
min 3, max 6

Distance:
From launch point to Nine Mile Point is roughly 8.5 km (4.5 nm)

Possible Hazard:

  • Strong wind in afternoon generating waves
  • Waves from small boats
  • Entrance to Salmon Inlet can have confusing waves from tidal movement.  We mitigate that by heading out early in the morning to minimize effects of wind, stay close to shore, and stay clear of the junction of Salmon Inlet and Sechelt Inlet.

Requirements:

  • Basic paddling strokes
  • Can handle at least 1 hours of continuous paddling (at relaxed pace) to reach the first rest stop
  • Can perform wet exit
  • Able to attend a trip planning meeting
