Overnight Camping for Beginners Workshop

When: April 21, 2018 until April 22, 2018

Location: Montague Harbour Marine Provincial Park, Galiano Island.

You hear about multi-day kayak-camping trips, you see films of fantastic trips and wonder “why not me?”  Multi-day adventures begin with your first overnight trip.  This workshop is ideal for first time overnighters and those with little experience kayak-camping or members who have participated mainly in guided tours.  Seize this opportunity, come learn what’s involved in a structured, stress-free learning environment.

We’ll be sharing the group campsite at Montague Harbour on Galiano Island with Rick Davies and Bob Salo who are running the Navigation course.  They’ll do their thing and we’ll do ours.  We’ll mingle with them on Saturday night.

The group campsite has a BBQ that requires briquettes and a fire ring for a camp fire, wood is available on site. There’s also running water for cleaning and counter space for food preparation along with picnic tables.

Learning objectives:

  • Experience the difference between an empty and full kayak,
  • Learn what equipment and clothes to take,
  • Discuss water and food, and
  • How to load all this “stuff” into a kayak so that it tracks well and makes your life easy and comfortable on the water.

Our goal is to help participants gain confidence in their paddling, packing and/or camping abilities and empower them to sign up for posted trips or join friends in fun kayaking adventures.

Pre-requisites:  Contact Chris Dennis at 604.418.8462 to learn more about the workshop and give Chris an opportunity to get to know you, your goals and experience.  Chris will also discuss the following:

  • Sleeping bags & pads,
  • Kayaks, paddles and Canadian Coast Guard related gear can be rented from Gulf Island Kayaking at Montague Harbour on Galiano Is.  – seakayak.ca,
