7:00pm Kathryn Anderson, Education Coordinator, Ocean Legacy Foundation
Ocean Legacy is a Canadian non-profit organization that has developed a world leading plastic pollution emergency response™ program called EPIC, an integrative approach to ocean plastics recovery and transformation incorporating Education & research; Policy and advocacy; Infrastructure development; Clean-up and restoration of the environment. Kathryn will open our June meeting, speaking from her role in education and research

7:20pm Karina Younk, Director and Chair of Stewardship Committee, BCMT

Coastal Caretakers are BC Marine Trails members who wish to contribute to BCMT’s vision of preserving and protecting our marine coastline as a natural recreation paradise for all to appreciate now and in the future. A life-long educator and outdoorswoman, Karina lives in Nanaimo and has been kayaking the BC Coast for 20 years. At BCMT she promotes World Oceans Week or WOW, encouraging all paddlers to contribute in a small way to protecting the beauty of BC’s coastal network of trails by collecting debris each time they paddle. She will share her project and insights about the Coastal Caretakers program with SKABC.

7:30pm Justine Curgenven, Cackle TV Productions

Justine will share her two adventures circumnavigating Haida Gwaii. Justine is an award-winning adventure filmmaker and expedition seakayaker, who’s programmes have aired on the National Geographic Channel, Channel 4, Channel 5 and the BBC. She runs Cackle TV and created the highly acclaimed “This is the Sea” series of sea kayaking DVDs. Her films have won over 20 prestigious prizes including best film at Graz Mountain Film Festival and best adventure film at Banff & Kendal Mountain Film Festivals. She’s been runner up in CKUK magazine’s “Paddler of the Year” & a finalist in Canoe & Kayak Magazine’s “Female Paddler of the Year” and “Expedition of the Year”. She was named as one of the UK’s top 20 living explorers by ‘The Telegraph’ and was invited to meet the Queen at a Buckingham Palace reception for adventurers. In 2016, she won “Media Professional of the Year” at the World Paddle Awards
