Boat Handling and Rescues – Registration page

When: May 31, 2025 until June 1, 2025 from 8:00 AM - 4:30 PM

Location:  Sasamat Lake (White Pine Beach) at təmtəmíxʷtən/Belcarra Regional Park

This course is highly recommended for Currents Course participants.

In this course you will learn and practice:

  • Techniques for efficient forward paddling
  • Reverse paddling
  • A variety of bracing techniques
  • A variety of steering and maneuvering strokes
  • Edging your boat to maneuver more efficiently
  • A variety of towing methods
  • A variety of self-rescue and assisted rescue techniques

Course Format:
Two-day weekend course.
Participants must be on the beach and ready to be on the water by 9:00 AM.
Participants will receive an email with further details prior to the course.

Prerequisites:
This course is hands on and participants should have taken a beginners course (preferably) or have some paddling experience.  You must wear paddling clothing that is suitable for immersion (eg. wet or dry suit) and be comfortable performing wet exits.   You must have all required safety equipment and your kayak must have water tight hatches and proper flotation or bulkheads.

Registration:  Open. Once your registration is confirmed by the course coordinator, you will receive a password to complete your registration.
NOTE: payment must be made within 48 hrs of receiving the link.  If payment is not received and there is a waitlist, your spot will be replaced with the next person on the waitlist.

Registration deadline: To avoid cancellation, 4 members must be registered and paid by noon of Friday May 23.

Transportation:  It is each participant’s responsibility to get themselves to the course location.  The course coordinator will email the group so that all participants have the email addresses of the others attending the course.  This will enable participants to reach out to the group or an individual to organize carpooling.  Carpooling is a great way to be kind to the environment, minimize parking issues at popular sites, and to minimize the cost of gas and ferries where applicable.

Parking:  At the time of posting, parking is $3.25/hr to a maximum daily rate of  $18.50 Parking is free until 10 am. Parking can be paid by PaybyPhone or HONK.  See link here for latest information.

SKABC Refund policy:
Subject to cancellation policies noted in the registration, if a course registrant cancels their registration, a full or partial refund of the course fee may be made only if another member is able to fill the vacant course place or if payments made by the Association to one or more third parties are refunded to the Association. All other refunds are at the discretion of the Training Officer.
