The Beginner Course is a foundational course that will give you the basic skills and knowledge to go on trips in sheltered waters or to join competently led trips in places such as Indian Arm and the Gulf Islands. You’ll learn:
- How to perform wet exit, assisted re-entry, and self re-entry,
- Strokes: Forward, reverse, stopping, sweep, draw, low brace, edge control
- Launching and landing,
- A brief overview of following topics:
- Equipment and equipment care
- Charts and compass
- Weather
- Sea State
- Risk Assessment and mitigation
- Communication
- Clothing
- Hypothermia and Hyperthermia, sun safety
- Lifting and carrying kayak
- Kayak tie down on a vehicle
- Resources
Pre-requisites : There are no pre-requisites for this course. Prior to the course you will receive a letter from the instructor with more details about the 3 day course.
Special Instructions: Students are responsible to provide their own boat and equipment. Rentals are available on site at Cates Park.
Course Format: This course includes a 2 hr evening introduction and theory session on Wednesday June 4 and two days at Cates Park in North Vancouver. Each day will include some theory and will be on the water.

– Saturday & Sunday Jun 6 & 7 – Cates Park (8:30 am – 4:30 pm)
Saturday June 7: This session will include theory and practicing wet exits and re-entry.
Sunday June 8: This session will include theory. Much of the course will be on the water.
NOTE: A wetsuit or drysuit is required for the on water activities

Registration deadline: To avoid cancellation SKABC reserves the right to cancel the course if the minimum of 4 paid registrants are not confirmed by noon on Wednesday May 28, 2025 and registration fees will be refunded.
Arrival time/meeting point/ parking notes:
Please arrive 45-60 minutes early to secure parking and ensure your boat and gear are at the picnic area immediately east of the canoe shed and you are ready to start at 8:30 am.
If you are renting, ensure that you allow time to complete the rental requirements if not completed in advance.
Given the popularity of N Vancouver beach parking, carpooling is strongly recommended. At the time of posting, parking is $3/hr. Residents of the District of North Vancouver may want to consider purchasing a “resident parking pass“.
SKABC Refund policy:
Subject to cancellation policies noted in the registration, if a course registrant cancels their registration, a full or partial refund of the course fee may be made only if another member is able to fill the vacant course place or if payments made by the Association to one or more third parties are refunded to the Association. All other refunds are at the discretion of the Training Officer.
