When: July 11, 2015 from 9:00 AM - 12:00 PM
Meet with other SKABC members on the water and have fun practicing your rescue skills. This is the best way to maintain your proficiency and learn new solo and assisted rescue techniques. Participants should be comfortable with a wet exit and have some experience with solo and assisted rescues. All participants must be current club members.
Launch at Deep Cove a 8.30 and paddle to Strathcona to play, or launch at Strathcona Park at 9.00 (easier parking, but no washrooms)
If launching at DC, be there before 8.00 to secure parking. Bring lunch in your boat if you plan to join the afternoon paddle.
Come prepared for a full morning in the water as I would like to practice the following rescues:
scoop rescue http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wE5y_DW2h04
Cleopatra’s needle (I am happy to flood my boat!) http://www.rapidmedia.com/kayaking/categories/skills/4946-video-empty-flooded-kayak-hatch-curl-rescue-cleopatras-needle.html
heel hook http://www.kayakpaddling.net/3-5
http://www.rapidmedia.com/kayaking/categories/skills/3315-video-heel-hook-assisted-rescue.html
Neither of these videos stress the need to stay long and low. Follow the same principle as the scoop and push your leg as far into the cockpit as possible. Grab the deck lines further away from the cockpit so you stay low and avoid the temptation to lift the body. You need to roll into your boat.
traditional T-rescue with anchor tow
(no video of the T-rescue, but the anchor tow is featured)

Anyone with energy left can join us for an afternoon paddle.
Probable route:
Back to Deep Cove (or Panorama Beach) to use the washrooms and have lunch, then cross to Jug Island, and across Bedwell Bay to the far shore. North to Twin Islands where we can alight for a short break. Around the north end of Twin Island and cross back to the west shore and back to Deep Cove, or down the middle of the channel to Racoon Island and back to Deep Cove / Strathcona. (Approx. 5 nm)
Rolling practice will probably happen along the way, but be limited to a quick roll on each side to cool off so that we do not delay the non-rollers in the group. Rollers will then encourage the non-rollers to cool off by doing a half or a full bow rescue in a supportive, fun atmosphere.
Alternate route if everyone is paddling.
Cross to Balcarra to use the washrooms and have lunch, then north to Jug Island etc.
Please let me know if you would like to attend and if there is anything else you would like to practice.
