Title: The Wolves of Nootka, or how a kayaker got sidetracked.
Talk description: John Kimantas shares his favorite locations in Nootka Sound, and discusses the history of the sound at the time of first European contact, 1774-1792, dispelling some myths and misconceptions about what occurred at that time.
Bio: John Kimantas is an author, journalist and explorer with 12 titles now, starting with the acclaimed series “The Wild Coast” in 2003. In 2007 he founded Wild Coast Publishing that now publishes about 60 products (maps and guide books) to aid coastal explorers, kayakers and hikers. He is winner of the 2025 Ray Pillman Award for his contribution to British Columbia recreation. His latest work, “The Wolves of Nootka,” is a trilogy exploring first European contact on the northwest Pacific coast of America with a focus on the events and people central to Nootka Sound. It will be released early March 2026.
