Exploring the area around Telegraph Cove: Johnstone Strait, Queen Charlotte Strait, Broughton Archipelago – B/C3

When: September 7, 2026 until September 13, 2026

Join Ken & Philip on a fall kayaking adventure into the Johnstone Strait Broughton Archipelago area for whale watching, fall style camping and more!

Trip Classification (Trip Classification guide): B/C3

Distance in nautical miles or hours: 10 nautical miles per day, depending on conditions and what the group wants to do.

Description of the paddle including launch site: Launch from Telegraph Cove. Visit various areas in the vicinity (Kaikash Creek, Leg Cove, Whitecliff Islets among others).

Leaders name: Ken Bigelow, Philip Kubik

Paddling and rescue skill expectations: Must be comfortable with exposed crossings, moderate wind and seas and current. Must have completed a successful self and assisted rescue in the past 12 months

What to bring: Camping gear, rain gear, warm clothing, food and cooking equipment. VHF radios, GPSs, InReachs, etc. are also useful. Bring first aid supplies if you have them.

Required clothing: Dry suit (preferred) or wet suit. The expectation is that you will be dressed for immersion all of the time we are on the water.

Parking situation and whether taking a ferry: There is paid parking at Telegraph Cove. We’ll be taking the ferry to Vancouver Island. Some participants may be attending the Newcastle Island camping weekend and leaving from Nanaimo on the morning of Monday, September 7th.

Pre-trip meeting? Yes. Date and time to be determined later.

Any other information you’d like potential participants to know: We are likely to move camp most days or even every day. Be prepared to be on the water early: depending on conditions, etc. we may be on the water as early as 8:00 a.m. You are expected to stay with the group at all times while we are on the water, close enough for easy communication, and not to leave the group while we’re at camp without letting others know. The leader may interview potential participants to ensure that they are a good match for the group and the trip.
