When: May 30, 2026 until June 5, 2026
Join Ken and Kapila for a mentored trip to beautiful Desolation Sound. This is a 2B trip with the theme of sharing knowledge and is suitable for paddlers new to the club or those who have no previous multi day kayak camping experience.

Required Paddling Skills / Gear: All participants are required to wear either a wet suit or dry suit when on the water, and have all Transport Canada required gear. Participants must be able to paddle 6-8 Knots distance in 2B conditions (see https://www.skabc.org/skabc-trip-classification/ ). Participants must have completed a successful self and assisted rescue in the past 12 months. Participants must have all overnight camping equipment (to be discussed at the pre-trip meeting).
Skills covered may include:
- Packing a kayak
- Basic Navigation
- Chart reading
- Group paddling guidelines
- Camp set-up
- Trip route planning decisions
- VHF radio use and listening to Weather Reports.
- GPS use, how to identify camp site using GPS coordinates
- Introduction to various apps that could be used for tides/currents, weather, track your route and distance etc.
Pre-Trip Meeting / Paddle: April 2026, Cates Park (Date TBD)
We will meet at Cates Park and or online via Zoom this April (Date TBD) to cover meal planning, carpooling, logistics and a few hours of paddling including a self rescue session at the end. This paddle will be to introduce ourselves and get to know our fellow paddlers.
Potential Hazards: The Desolation sound is on the inside passage of Vancouver Island and can be subject to wind and choppy water
Leadership Style: Group stays together, able to communicate at all times.
Launch/Return Location: Okeover/Lund BC
Possible camp sites:- Okeover (1st night), Curme Island, Bold Head, Roscoe Bay, Martin Island, Copelands.
Transportation:– Participants are required to drive to Oakover on their own. Carpooling arrangements can be made once the sign-up process is completed.
Cost:– Participants are responsible for all transportation costs getting to Okaover/Lund, return. Once the group is confirmed, everyone will be required to pay a deposit allowing trip leaders to book campsites, park passes, parking, launching and camping fee.
Number of participants: 4
Due to park reservation requirements and the mentoring process, a maximum of 4 participants will be selected totaling six in the group.
