Simson Park: Walking trail work (brushing) Water Taxi

When: January 2, 2026 until January 6, 2026

Getting there

We will share rides to Secret Cove BC, traveling from Horseshoe Bay on 07:30 ferry – recommend booking. Ferry fares are proposed to be reimbursed by SKABC based on submitted claim & receipt. We have booked a water taxi – also proposed to be paid by SKABC that will take us to Buccaneer Bay, South Thormanby Island.

Accommodation

We will be the guests of Mr H, a cottage owner there who has a long connection with the island community and knows the adjacent Park well.  The cabin and 2 adjacent small sleeping cabins have propane heat and propane cooking equipment. We will bring sleeping bags. Some of us might need to bring mattresses to sleep on the floors – depends on numbers. I understand that there is no regular electricity (generator power occasionally).

Work Party

We will walk about 3-5 km each day to/from the trails near Farm and Drift Bays, where we have been brushing in 2025. We might also look for missing trail directional signs with a metal detector (if available) and sundry smaller tasks.

What to bring

Sturdy work clothes, boots and rain gear suggested. Gloves, eye, hearing protection provided or bring your own. Tools provided. Planned use of gas-powered tools such as hedge trimmer. Bring your own food. If we can find a willing coordinator, we might be successful in sharing some or most meals. Bring a backpack to carry tools, bag lunches and water for lunch.

I’m hoping we will have time for a hike to one of the viewpoints, Mt Seafield, Spyglass Hill or Bertha I View. Simson Park is beautiful and there is plenty of wildlife to observe (such as hundreds of newts in September!).

To return we can either pre-book ferry from Langdale to Horseshoe Bay at a time t.b.a. or we can play it by ear as booking is usually not necessary mid-week.

No paddling is planned. If members prefer to paddle the 3 NM each way, they may do so independently, but it will not be a component of this sanctioned trip. We’l have specific paddling trips later in the year- it is an excellent area.

If you are interested but cannot fit this schedule, a shorter visit might be possible but you will need to arrange water taxi and road transport separately from the group and our club likely won’t cover the fare.

Group size

Only 5 of us will fit into the cabins. Beyond that number some folks will be sleeping in tents, so early birds get a warm reward!
