Thormanby Islands (2B) – TRIP FULL

When: September 21, 2018 until September 23, 2018

Trip now Full
Thormanby Island, one of the Sunshine Coast’s best kept secrets, is noted for its sandy beaches and pristine shoreline. Low tide exposes tidal pools and a variety of colourful marine life between Thormanby and North Thormanby Island.

Take the 9:50am Friday ferry from Horseshoe Bay to Langdale. Return Sunday September 16th catching the 3:30pm ferry from Langdale. Ferry Reservations are strongly required for both sailings.

Launch from Buccaneer Marina located in Secret Cove’s north east arm, paddle along the shoreline into Smugglers Cove Marine Park, then cross Welcome Passage to South Thormanby Island. Base camp on sandy spit (limited camping sites).  The next day explore North Thormanby Island.

Crossing Welcome Passage requires some caution due to high pleasure boat traffic, afternoon winds and current can make waters rough. A wetsuit or drysuit will be mandatory. Extra clothes, food and camping gear should be properly stowed in waterproof containers and/or dry bags in case of a capsize or inclement conditions. Participants should have previous experience doing multi-day trips.

Paddle skills should include basic strokes, wet exit, self rescue and rescue assist.

There will be room for 6 people to join co-leaders Patti Gordon and Steve Barnes, with a total group size limited to 8.  A pre-trip paddle and planning meeting will be arranged and all participants are required to attend both.
