Greenland Paddle Carving Course

When: September 9, 2017 until September 10, 2017 from 9:30 AM - 4:00 PM

Location: Crescent Park, South Surrey

A recent post on the SKABC Forum generated an overwhelming level of interest from SKABC members expressing their desire to carve their own Greenland Paddle.

We are pleased to offer a Greenland Paddle Carving course. Participants will learn how to carve a piece of wood into a nice paddle and get a chance to try out their new Greenland paddle on the water. In addition to learning how to make the paddle, participants will get an introduction to woodworking using hand tools.

Course Format:
We meet in the park and turn wood into paddles with individual assistance as needed. This year the course will include an extra bonus day to ensure that all the paddles get completed and tried out on the water. The format will be as followed:

Day 1 | 9:30am – Carve as much of your paddle as you can. You get to go home at the end of the day, enjoy a good meal and a great night sleep.
Day 2 | 9:30am until 2:00pm – Come back with your kayak, complete your paddle, and …
| 2:30pm until 4:00pm – join us on the water using your newly carved paddle.

Registration: Click on the PayPal link below and follow the prompts to complete your payment.

Instructor: Richard Jensen
Course Coordinator: Chantal Ethier (chantalethier@msn.com)

Fee: $60 (does not include the cost of a block plane; perhaps you can borrow one for the course)

Limit: 10 participants

Special Notes: Bring lunches and snacks (both days). The registration cost includes a cedar plank and a jig to support the paddle while you work on your project. Tools used will be small hand planes and spoke shaves. We have some tools to loan during the course, but if you have access to a sharp block plane (either yours borrowed from a friend) please let Chantal know in advance. (Planes larger than 6″ will not really work out for this project.) With your help, we will try our best to have a good assortment of tools available.

Wait list: Should the course fill up before you have an opportunity to register, please contact Chantal to be included on a wait list. An email will be sent out explaining how to pay the course fee and complete your course registration if a space opens up in the course.
