Desolation Sound and Discovery Islands Camping (2B/2C)

When: July 17, 2017 until July 22, 2017

This Trip is now Full
This is multiday paddling and camping trip in Desolation Sound and the Discovery Islands group. The waters of this area are relatively protected and suitable for less experienced paddlers.
Description: Starting from Okeover Inlet, this paddle heads across Desolation Sound, through Lewis Channel to the Penn Islands and Rendezvous Islands. We’ll be starting from the Powell River Sea Kayak base in Okeover, so boat rentals will be available. Note that this paddle is listed as a level 2. If conditions in Desolation Sound are rougher than this, we’ll shift gears and come up with an alternate plan. We’ll be paddling about 11 nautical miles per day.

  • Monday, July 17 – Ferry to Gibsons, drive, ferry to Saltery Bay, drive to Okeover Inlet and PRSK base in Penrose Bay. Paddle to Feather Cove campsite at end of Malaspina Peninsula (11 km/5.9 nm)
  • Tuesday, July 18 – Feather to Lewis North campsite (19.6 km/10.6 nm)
  • Wednesday, July 19 – Lewis to Penn Islands campsite, with possible exploration into Evans Bay (20 km/10.8 nm)
  • Thursday, July 20 – Penn Islands to Lewis North campsite, via Rendezvous Islands (20 km/10.8 nm)
  • Friday, July 21 – Lewis to Martin Islands campsite, with exploration along the West Redonda Island shoreline (20 km/10.8 nm)
  • Saturday, July 22 – Martin Islands to Penrose Bay (16.2 km/8.8 nm)

This area provides an almost infinite set of variables for trip planning. If the group wishes to paddle longer days or extend the paddle beyond July 22, that is easily accommodated. There is a charge for parking and launching at Penrose Bay, however it is slightly less than Lund. The Feather campsite is a BC Parks site with a fee. None of the campsites listed have anything more than rudimentary facilities, which is to say there are no enclosed outhouses! The price for paddling this very beautiful area.
