Training and Safety Overview

Comfortable doing self- and assisted rescues under any wind and wave condition? Carry a VHF radio and know how to use it? Understand the risk of hypothermia? Know when NOT to be on the water?

Because it is important to have a healthy respect for the ocean and its inherent dangers, safety is a cornerstone of SKABC’s philosophy. The requisite technical skills and sound judgment needed to deal with the unexpected can be developed through completion of our training courses and time spent kayaking with experienced club members.

Core training courses developed by SKABC and taught on a volunteer basis by our seasoned members include:

Beginner’s Course
Strokes and Rescue
Navigation
Weather
Currents
Surf Kayaking
Best Practices in Kayak Camping
Trip Leader
Instructor’s Course

The detailed course schedule is updated throughout the season in the Events Calendar in the Member Section.

Additional courses organized by SKABC for its members include:

Knots and Tarp Rigging
Rolling clinic
VHF Radio Operators License
Greenland Paddle Carving
Wilderness First Aid
Star and Constellation Identification
Kayak Repair
Skill workshops and other specialty topics

Please note that courses focus on skill development, not certification, and are only available to SKABC members.
